What We Do

Our Mission Statement

Our mission is to illuminate the art of classical ballet through the exemplary Vaganova Method—globally recognized for its unmatched precision, expressive depth, and transformative power. Rooted in the traditions of the Imperial Russian Ballet and carried forward by a distinguished faculty from Russia, Ukraine, and other post-Soviet states, we offer students in Canada the rare opportunity to train authentically in this revered methodology.

As a ballet school, we are committed to providing comprehensive classical dance education that nurtures discipline, artistry, and personal growth. Through structured ballet courses for children, teens, and adults, we empower our students to engage fully with the language of ballet—whether they pursue performance careers, international competitions, or recreational enrichment. Our programs offer globally recognized certification and the unique chance to share the stage with professional dancers in formal productions.

We are proud to be at the forefront of popularizing classical ballet in Toronto and across Canada, helping to build a cultural landscape where excellence in dance is not only preserved but celebrated. We bring forward the rigor, poetry, and lineage of one of the world's most storied traditions—inviting our students to contribute meaningfully to the evolution of ballet.

We welcome dancers of all body types, gender identities, orientations, and nationalities. Our school stands in solidarity with those who have been historically marginalized, persecuted, or forced to flee their homelands—artists whose courage has carried the spirit of ballet across borders and generations. We believe that art is what it means to be human, and that ballet, in its truest form, knows no bounds. It is our privilege to teach a method that transcends politics and prejudice, and to offer a space where all dancers are free to move, create, and belong.

At the heart of our school is a belief that ballet is more than technique—it is a way of seeing, feeling, and shaping the world. We are here not only to teach dance, but to cultivate artists, awaken potential, and share the enduring beauty of the Vaganova Method with every student who walks through our doors.

The Russian Ballet Method

What Is The Vaganova Method?

The Vaganova Method is the cornerstone of Russian classical ballet—a pedagogical system developed in the early 20th century by Agrippina Vaganova, a former ballerina of the Mariinsky Theatre and graduate of the Imperial Ballet School in St. Petersburg. Rooted in the legacy of the Imperial Russian Ballet and shaped by centuries of French and Italian influence, Vaganova’s method unified these traditions into a singular, codified approach to training. Her syllabus, formalized in her seminal work Fundamentals of Classical Dance, became the foundation of the curriculum at the Vaganova Academy, which today remains the most revered ballet institution in the world.

Unlike Western methods such as Cecchetti, RAD, or American Balanchine-based techniques, the Vaganova Method is holistic—training the entire body to move as one expressive instrument. It emphasizes not only strength, precision, and classical form, but also musicality, emotional depth, and refined épaulement. Dancers trained in this method develop an unmistakable presence: sculpted yet lyrical, technical yet alive. Their movements resonate not simply through clean lines, but through the expressive power of artistry—the very quality that leaves audiences breathless.

The exceptional effectiveness of the Vaganova Method is reflected in the legendary dancers it has produced. Mikhail Baryshnikov, Alexander Godunov, Ekaterina Maximova, Maya Plisetskaya, Anna Pavlova, Rudolf Nureyev, Vladimir Vasiliev, and Galina Ulanova all rose to international acclaim through this lineage. Their brilliance on stage is the enduring legacy of a method that remains, to this day, the highest standard of ballet training in the world.

In Memoriam: Edward Zilber

Edward Zilber (formerly Golubenko) was a ballet master, choreographer, and visionary whose career spanned decades and continents. His dedication to classical ballet and performance artistry shaped countless dancers and productions.

Edward graduated in 1962 from the Bolshoi Theatre Choreographic School (now the Bolshoi Ballet Academy) in Moscow, where he trained under Professors Sergueev, Dudinskaya, and Gussev in the Agrippina Vaganova method. In 1977, he earned a Musical Show Production Diploma from Korsakov University Musical in St. Petersburg, Russia, further expanding his expertise in stage production and choreography.

Edward danced with the Bolshoi Theatre (1957-1971) as a member of the corps de ballet and performed with the New York City Ballet (1957-1959). He served as Chief Choreographer at Ivan Franko Opera (1971-1977) and the Moscow Variety Theatre (1989-1994). From 1977-1989, he was Artistic Director at the Alma-Ata Choreographic School, where he trained and mentored hundreds of young dancers.

Between 1991-1994, Edward toured internationally with his freelance ballet troupe based in Rishon LeTsiyon, Israel, which he created out of his love for choreography and ballet storytelling.

In 1994, he joined Natalia in founding The Russian Ballet School, first in Israel before relocating to Canada, where he continued to choreograph and mentor dancers.

As a founding member of our institution, Edward’s impact remains deeply felt. His full-length production, “Vienna Woods,” stands as a testament to his artistic legacy. His work lives on in the dancers he trained, the ballets he created, and the unwavering standard of excellence he set.

Edward passed away on March 10, 2010, leaving behind a rich and enduring contribution to the world of ballet.

Natalia Zilber - Founder Of Russian Ballet School In Toronto Canada
My daughter has been attending the school for the last three years. She loves it, even though it's often challenging. It has definitely helped her physical development, posture, and coordination. Her ballet teacher, Adriana, has a clear gift for teaching. She is calm, patient, very professional, and attentive to every student in her class.

The Director, Natalia, has created a great learning environment. The school is very well organized, which removes a lot of stress from the parents. Natalia is very dedicated to the development and well-being of the school and her students. She often goes the extra mile to accommodate individual parents or children's situations.

The school's location is very convenient, easily accessible by transit, car, or even on foot if you are lucky enough to live in the neighbourhood. I highly recommend this school!
Aleks Kozyrev
My daughter has been attending the Academy for the last 4 years, and she also participates in the summer program every year. She now spends an average of 8 hours a week there, but each time she is as excited to go as if it were her first time.

I greatly appreciate how dedicated Natalia, Adriana, and Julia are to providing the children with a solid dance foundation, building their confidence, and instilling in them a lifelong love of dance. They always make an effort to get to know their students on a personal level, aiming to better them both inside and outside of dance. Their encouragement and support are truly amazing.

The children learn more than just dance here. It's about cultivating a mindset and ability to lead a healthy and successful lifestyle. I can see that my daughter is also developing wonderful friendships because the environment in the studio is so inspirational and fun. It’s been my extreme pleasure to witness the students' growth from year to year. I’m glad that my daughter has found professionalism, discipline, and encouragement in this place. This is a wonderful place to help your child grow, not only as a dancer but as a person.
Yulia Sargsyan
My daughter has been attending The Russian Ballet School for 12 years. She started in grade one and has continued to dance throughout all her school years. Now, she feels quite confident and is able to perform variations from classical ballet performances.

The Russian Classical Ballet School is the studio where her childhood dream to dance came true.Natalia, Adriana, and Julia are extremely professional and dedicated teachers who are ready to devote all their time to their students.

I highly recommend this studio to anyone who wants to explore the world of dance, develop their skills, and continue growing.
Marina Yakubovsky
The school's location is convenient, the parents' waiting area is clean and comfortable, and the teachers are both professional and friendly. Many times, I've seen teachers who dance well themselves but struggle to teach effectively. However, the teachers here truly know how to instruct kids.

My daughter started learning classical ballet at this school when she was four, and now, at seven years old, she's dancing Esmeralda. I am extremely pleased with the effort these teachers put in and am amazed by the results. The most important thing is that my daughter enjoys every single moment of dance here. I highly recommend this school.
Claire Yang
My 8-year-old daughter has been training at the school for 4 years now, and she loves it! The Director, Natalia, takes a lot of pride in her work and always puts in the extra time and effort to ensure the girls continually improve. The other two ballet teachers, Adrianna and Julia, are wonderful as well.

Things do get fairly busy leading up to the year-end show, as there tend to be extra or longer practice sessions. However, this is only because Natalia and her team are committed not just to making the show a success, but also to ensuring every girl walks away with a sense of pride and accomplishment.

I highly recommend this school!
